I am 47, have an English degree, and have never read 1984. So here we go.

Gotta be honest—I’m not enjoying this nearly as much as the last Strout I read. I mostly dislike all of these characters. Forcing myself to slog through, and losing most of my interest in finishing.

Reading in fits and spurts because it’s emotional work , but I’m highlighting a lot

Well written, but I’m struggling through this, thinking of my own sons who are about this age and the strain of helping them through the big, hard parts of life while I’m helpless to do much. It’s hitting hard.

Hitting the life-lessons moralizing a little hard in the last couple of chapters. Some is good—too much feels really cheesy.

After a year of trying to figure out what is going on with me both neurologically and physically, this has been fascinating. It didn’t exactly give me any answers, but better understanding the brain’s physical response to physical illness at least creates scientific links between some of the things I’ve observed personally. A dense but great read.

So well written and fascinating. Also giving me hope for the dementia I’ll eventually develop.

Really well and entertainingly written! And a lot to think about. I'm enjoying this.

I’ve been “reading” this for six weeks, so maybe it’s not gonna happen.

Much improved after the first few chapters, I'm pleased to say. I'm enjoying the characters. (I volunteer as tribute to be this book's copyeditor. It suffers enormously from incomplete-sentence-itis, among other grammar issues.)

Eh. Historically interesting. I have thoughts about the writing style. They are many. They may not be nice.
