Me re-reading a romance? High-praise indeed! (and I'm in a funk and need a guaranteed good time)

This last book in the series is really embracing a time-travel element. I personally like a time travel trope, but I know it's not everyone's favorite, so just FYI.

I didn't realize this book is in the same world as the new Lyonesse series!

It was not intentional, but I'm reading this right after finishing A Terrible Thing to Waste, and these two books pair perfectly together

Ugh, not Maryam saying she will be betrayed and "I will die so my words may live" in an absolute plagiarism of Christ's storyline. Can you still call this a "feminist retelling" if the female characters just parallel their male counterparts?

OK, I'm already reminded of A Half-Built Garden. Not in terms of plot or themes, but in the sense that this is a more philosophical, elegant sci-fi story, and a very creative imagining of a potential human future.

I'm getting "The City We Became" vibes, but with way more viscera- horror

OK, I was already having a good time, and now there's a reference to the band The Hu. I am the target audience apparently 😆

I'm only 10 pages in and already the echoes of the nonfiction book I'm reading, Mediocre, are strongly felt. No more waiting for God to save us from mediocre men, I hope Lilith will save us

Brb- I have to go pre-order the sequel immediately

So far this is delightful. Some tough content- but told with such gentleness.

yikes, this content has not aged well
(published 1995)

Ooh, I think this is going to be a good time

Hm, not off to a great start...

Dear author, not every noun needs an adjective...

OK, the second half is going better. I still don't love it, but I had a thought that this character kind of reminds me of the main character in Fleabag, and somehow that makes me less annoyed at Julia's behavior.

I'm seriously considering DNF-ing this, I am not having a good time.
I do like the audio narrator though.

Trying out the audiobook this reread

Ok, I'm warming up to the story, and the spectrum of nonbinary identities is lovely

Is it just me or is the grammar and sentence structure really clunky so far?

Did I just devote this in two days? Yes, yes I did. Standing Ovation.

Ooh, this is already giving me chills. And the audiobook narrator is excellent.
