Purgatorio, Cantos 1 - 7 done.

"A Mother": A mom (rightly) fights for her daughter to be paid for providing piano accompaniments for several concerts. Pay your musicians, people!

"A Painful Case": a story about unrequited love that ends with tragedy.

"Ivy Day in the Committee Room": a group of canvassers (probably in it for the money) reflect the general apathy towards politicians and politics, even towards the figures people tend to revere.

"Counterparts": A warning against alcoholism.

"Clay": A young woman picks her destiny... twice.

Volume 1 done!

"A Little Cloud": A really moving account about a man who wants out and his rich 'friend' who might want back in.

"How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful!"

The Boarding House: "He remembered well, with the curious patient memory of the celibate, the first casual caresses her dress, her breath, her fingers had given him."

Inferno complete!

where a round opening brought in sight the blest

and beauteous shining of the Heavenly cars.
And we walked out once more beneath the Stars."

"Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me."

"Two Gallants": Mmmmm, hot green pea's, ginger beer, and 'biscuits'.

After the Race: "Daybreak, gentlemen!"

...I feel my heart glow with an enthusiasm which elevates me to heaven; for nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose,—a point on which the soul may fix it's intellectual eye.

Araby: a young narrator decides to go gift shopping for a girl and accidentally has an epiphany.
"Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger."


Eveline: a young woman prepares to leave home with a sailor.
"—Derevaun Seraun! Derevaun Seraun!"

“Frank had given the herniated intestine a little squeeze. 'Honk, honk! Oh! I feel my lunch moving through… yup, there goes the corn bread!' Uncle Frank had not been invited to the following year’s picnic.”



Oh no. Oh no oh no oh nooooo.

"An Encounter": Cowboys, Indians, and Stranger Danger.

"But real adventures, I reflected, do not happen to people who remain at home: they must be sought abroad."

Volume IV, Part II complete! Only a few more major sections to go!

"There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke."

The Sisters: Just your ordinary story about a dead reverend and his empty wine cup.

Inferno, Cantos 22 - 28 complete. Only a few days left before we begin the climb up.

I wondered how many people there were in the world who suffered, and continued to suffer, because they could not break out from their own web of shyness and reserve, and in their blindness and folly built up a great distorted wall in front of them that hid the truth. This was what I had done.

Gramma - Creepy, a little too long though.

Partway through the second to last story and it feels like I'm spinning my wheels... Feeling like this collection could have used just a bit more curation. Some really great ones in here, but the majority are just average.

Inferno Cantos 15 - 21 complete.

I'm afraid my stress levels will never be the same again after reading more of this damn book.
