Half of this book is a fun retrospective on a minor character from the first novel and the other half is a genuinely eye rolling Catholic self jerk. I say this as a Catholic.

I have a real love hate relationship with this series, but the past 100 pages or so have been really amazing.

I will probably keep on reading because I am liking the story enough, but the Sollan Empire might be one of the least interesting galactic empires I’ve ever read. despite millennia passing between our time and the time of the novels, our antiquity seems to inform their cultural norms more than our own time. All the nobles are nobles of our time, Windsor and Bourbon and Hohenzolleren. This is boring, I’m sorry.

Very seriously my desire to read this series as ground to a total halt after learning the author is a fan of Jordan Peterson

Pacing is so far the best in the series.

Ruocchio’s growth as an author is immense. Already vastly better than Empire of Silence, both in prose and with its pacing.

I’m not sure this book is good or mid. It’s certainly not bad. But I find my eyes glazing over at times, it feels like little has happened and I’ve read over half of it already. This series is pegged as an epic space opera but I haven’t really seen the epicness nor the space opera-ness, it’s really at this point the misfortunes of a space noble.

Feels like something terrible is going to happen

If I was in Capustan I would intervene, just saying

Am I getting Malazan finally or am I just giving up trying to understand it and humming to its tune? Who knows.

Feels like Erikson just keeps improving as a writer. Enjoying this a lot so far.

Erikson doesn’t spare the rod in this book at all, maybe the most grim dark fantasy book I’ve ever read (so far).

Malazan forgive me but this is lowkey my delicious slop rn, can’t get enough
