The language is just so stunningly lyrical—all the images, not lingering but just quiet, and with such an eye for beauty.

The loveliest and most insane thing about this book is that I forgot the big reveal—and honestly, I validate myself for forgetting the reveal 😭😭 The truth is so much more peripheral to the way Rachel writes about Wick, and that I remembered.

So many thoughts I’ve had over the past 3 years were because of this book, and I’m only discovering now, rereading.

I forgot how tragic Wick and Rachel are from the beginning, especially knowing Wick’s side of things.

It’s been a bit since I’ve read a prose piece that makes me want to write—this does it for me. I think it’s how Monson knows when to linger in a moment, when to leave it, when to let it blend and fade into something else.

Like: “The thing that saves him—that saves Dutch, and by extension us…” (p. 207) where he goes on about shared identity, leaving that first clause for some paragraphs later.
