Not even the instigating event in this makes sense. He wins the battle, it explicitly tells you on the page they win by disabling with fake bombs. Then the other guy blows up his ship with a trick.... after he's already lost.

So the MC won, or it's a draw, but the author hopes you forget what HE tells you a few pages earlier? Sigh.

(As an aside, another over obvious "twist" like in book 1)

Were the authors similes so bad in book 1?

Drift like wayward spirits.... All logic and strict order. What?

My silence thunders. What?

Space, vast and terrible. Errr...

Carved from angry marble. Jesus Christ make it stop.

I never noticed how bad this was in book 1, it either slipped past me or the author has changed, for the worse.

I'm out already, taking a break after a few pages.

A big event has happened (obviously off page, in fitting with this series) & instead of talking about it a 30 year old man starts having a hissy fit in front of a doctor because his cock is out. Then he obsesses about how someone he knows looks different, but doesnt.... Then they have a childish argument. WTF.

Maybe he blew up a sun because he's a man child. Waah

Nothing can be worse than the first volume... Hold my beer, says Dan Abnett. At 39% in (skim read again, as it's trash) NOTHING has happened, Nothing. So many words have never said so little.
To top it off at this stage with nothing happening the author in a shit smelling cul de sac of his own making..... Has just said "it's chaos" and changed everything because he's an awful writer who cannot plot a book. So, so bad

How this book is rated 4.5 stats is beyond me. Each to their own, but seriously? I'm 20% in and quite literally NOTHING has happened. It's re-iterated something the past 50+ books have already done, spat out a load of paragraphs of events with nothing of note happening, had load of flashbacks AND tried introducing new characters!?

You could erase the entirety of what I have read and nothing would change, NOTHING.

I don't know David Grann's history but I'm assuming American.

In The Wager he (rightly) gives Britain a very hard time over the slave trade and regularly diverts the narrative to cover it.

His coverage of the Americans despicable actions and destruction of the Indians are largely glossed over, as something inevitable, without the haranguing he (again rightly) gives the British.

Very odd after reading Wager first.

I find it odd you can talk about eastern philosophy and completely disregard Japan.

Another niggle it reads very much like a textbook as opposed to a book to read and enjoy (whilst teaching) such as Bertrand Russell brilliant tome on western philosophy.
