Another one that I need to return to. Very detailed descriptions of carpentry techniques in the 1800's. Also, beautiful stories of the role of carpenters in villages in the 19th century. We take for granted ladders, buckets, wash basins, bread kneading bowls, fence gates, windows, and so many more items that were all made by hand 150 years ago.

I haven't read much of this book lately, but I need to continue because it is such a compelling story of rebuilding his family farm and his father's legacy from scratch.

This book is a collector's item for watercolor painters. John Pike is a legend in watercolor artists, and I know very little about him. Great collection of his paintings and techniques.

So far so good! Great advice from the start of the book -- make written plans of what you want to do flower farming. I appreciate that it does not have the usual 50 pages of dribble that so many nonfiction writers include to fluff up their books to be an impressive saleable length for one idea that could be summarized in 5 pages.

Very thought provoking and lyrical prose so I read a chapter at a time. Love his connections to his heritage and his environments. He reflects on the land, water, flora, and fauna as his ancestors experienced them. I don't know much about Northern California's coastal areas, so this book is very educational.

My new most favorite book!! Since I read it before bed, I have to set a timer so I don't go to bed too late. Given to me by my daughter for my birthday. Thank you so much, Hannah!

Very intense stories with compelling characters. Garland is a master writer. Some of his scenes are so painful to experience. He spends equal time on the plight of farm wives and mothers in the 1800's which I appreciate very much.

I love this book, but it is one to read in small chunks. Sarris is a very poetic writer and I am deeply drawn into his scenes.

I am almost half way through the book and we are nearing completion of 24 hours. However, it is 24 hours of many characters. Cooper has introduced many colorful characters, but I feel that one of the leading characters, Elizabeth, the daughter, has been left languishing in development as Cooper introduces many characters in great detail. I look forward to actually seeing the story unfold. .

It's a very thoughtful book, prose as poetry inlay if the essays, so it's slow reading. Beautiful descriptions and I love the author's journey to learn about his rich ethnic and cultural heritage. The recent chapter that I read is a very poetic landscape of a beautiful nature area in California.

Wow, wading through "old English" as the book was written in the 1820s. Quite a lot of words I don't know, and I thought I had a good vocabulary. It is interesting reading about the authentic details of life, homes, clothing, transportation, etc., which is what drew me to the Leather Stocking tales.
