Not all abuse [of children] is related to the use of drugs or alcohol, of course. Many parents are simply too immature and selfish to meet the pressing needs of babies and toddlers. … the disengagement of parents in our fast paced and dizzying world will show up repeatedly in our discussion of boys. It is THE underlying problem plaguing children today.

After briefly reviewing physiological differences between boys and girls and the effects testosterone has on both, he makes the case for why modern feminisms movement to feminize boys is destroying boy's ability to be masculine more than could possibly understand.

On being an authentic leader..."Leaders who draw security from God through Jesus are free to obey God. Leaders who long for security through affirmation from their followers will do whatever is necessary to obtain it."

Thus far, I can't say that I'm impressed with this book. Paine has covered goal setting (for financial purposes) and budgeting. The budgeting section would be fine for someone absolutely new to managing personal finance, but I would certainly recommend Dave Ramsey's method. One key difference is that Ramsey advises creating an emergency fund first before starting debt repayment, while Paine's method does not. Ouch.

Krista Joy is 5% done with The Wonder of Boys: What Parents, Mentors and Educators Can Do to Shape Boys into Exceptional Men
Author illustrates differences between male/female brain. Females: larger corpus collosum (connects left/right hemisphere), more left brain oriented which uses more language skills. Males: smaller CC (above) larger right hemisphere which means better spatial recognition (think architecture) and abstract concepts such as math. Girls prefer to act out life scenarios with others, boys prefer "active play" outdoors.

The other children who were given praise about their intelligence were seen to not push themselves for fear of failure and preferred instead to " save face". Praise should be specific and emphasize effort, not intelligence.

This last chapter has been primarily about over- praising and the effect that it can have on ones perception of intelligence and ability. The authors cite several examples where children who were praised on effort when challenged by a test, rather than how smart they were, we seen to apply greater focus and effort to additional testing, often improving their results.
