I am encouraged as I keep reading that I can put together a successful plan to give myself that same feeling of relief that comes with being debt free
Once you get debt free, the greatest skill you will have learned is patience with finances. Unless you are wealthy, very few people can just buy everything they want or need.
I had to declare bankruptcy after my divorce (no uncommon with divorce) but for the next 3 years I was forced to live within my means, as I no longer had any credit cards or could apply for a loan. I would never tell anyone to do this to get debt free, but being forced to live without any credit had completely changed how I live. Even now that I can get a loan or credit card. You do find out that you can live in a smaller place, with less stuff and saving for a special thing is really worth it.
