I can't imagine explaining "sleep" to someone who had never heard of it. "Hey, I'm going to fall unconscious and hallucinate for a while. By the way, I spend a third of my time doing this. And if I can't do it for a while, I go insane and eventually die. No need for concern."

Wow, the language hit me like a brick wall. I'm not a native English speaker, but I considered myself proficient until I started reading this. I have to look up several words on every page and reread sentences to get the pace right in order for them to make sense :)) However, I'm already intrigued by the story and the passion other readers seem to have for this novella. Can't wait to really get into it.

So far, this book feels quite depressing to me. It started out colourful and full of light and hope, even if it has some darkness to it as well, but not even a third in, it's become heart-wrenching. I've read about torture and rape before, but Rani Manicka has a way with describing awful things, so matter-of-fact and yet leaving just enough to the imagination, that I honestly thought it would give me nightmares.
