His exploration of the coexistence of multiple species of humans tens of thousands of years ago is fascinating.

Many historians explore the consequences of humans being the dominant life form on earth right now. This is the first book that I’ve read that discusses the question of why and how the apex species of humans is Homo Sapiens.

Interesting book. Very ambitious project. Not a book that must be read from beginning to end to gain valuable insight from it. Recently reread the first third. This portion provides interesting insights into the beliefs about the mind and AI 50 years ago.

Recently saw a short interview with the author where he commented on the recent drastic changes in AI. Extremely clear his views are different now.

Initially the story seems disjointed but it is beginning to make more sense.

As a liberal with vague notions that there must be better economic systems than capitalism, the author is very good at challenging this belief. So far he seems to make a strong case for a regulated market economy. As another reviewer noted, it seemed like it might be dry going in, but if you ever wondered about how wealth actually works, this seems like a good place to start.

<> I think that I caught just a glimpse of an upcoming plot twist. Possible spoiler: After revealing to the reader that Juanita Marquez became pregnant at 15, the author leaves this open-ended. We later learn that "Y.T." is precisely 15 years younger than Protagonist, who we know is 30 and infer is the same age as Juanita Marquez, since they met during their freshman year of college.

The prose grabs you by the nostrils and slings you into a hyper-kinetic future of samurai-wearing pizza delivery drivers and suburban city-states. This is so different from Anathem as to seem to be written by an alter-ego.
