I love this quote. People naturally want to believe that a constitution protects them by placing definitive limits on a ruler's power. Paul argues that written laws are ultimately just words on paper; they cannot stop raw power, religious fervor, or human ambition when the chips are down.

Finished part one. The heist planning has a real Oceans 11 vibe so far. Love the description of the magic system too. The world building is also fantastic.

Been reading this over the last month to my kids at night.

Second time reading this. Really interesting this second time through in the light of recent advances in AI. Crichton was way ahead of his time and I think readers will see new life in this 20 year old book.

Ok time to finish this after a detour with Andy Weir.
