Fantastic. A gem. I can't believe I've never stumbled across this before. I could wish for better footnotes, but it's a small quibble.

I'm loving this so far. I got bit by the Egypt bug a long time ago...

Well, this book just keeps gearing better and better. Excellent characters, very good world building, and extremely good writing.

Liking it do far.

100 pp first day. An easy read, your usual roguish charmer for a main character, but some pretty interesting world building. Feels very D&D, but that's not surprising. Two thumbs up so far, although I have a small problem with the raven familiar, about which more later.

History should nearly always make you angry. This book should make you furious.

So far, so good. I've read some of the other books in this series and I love 'em. Post-Cromwell London so well described you can almost smell it. Great historical fiction and detective novel, with lots of politics and intrigue.

Te overuse of the past perfect tense at the beginning (during big info dumps) was clunky and really annoying and nearly caused a DNF. But I pushed through and it has improved. The story plays out a bit like a D&D tournament module, which is fine. Overall, I'm enjoying it.

What on earth possessed the author to write this in second person????

Oh man... i really want to like this book. But I'm having a hard time getting past the awkward writing style. As a D&D playing, John Hughes movie watching video gamer from the 1980s, i feel like i should be a natural fit for this. But it's a struggle.

Of the 1600 Canadians who served with the Internationals in Spain, half were killed in action, including those summarily executed by the fascists. This is a moving, and heart breaking book, and a reminder of the ability of History to make you angry. Makes me want to go out and kick some "anti-mask" peopke in the ass.
