Far more enjoyable of a read than Villette, although Villette has very much contributed to the lens in which I view Jane Eyre. Villette is almost autobiographical, bitter. It’s a realistic response to the kind of tortured childhood than Jane had. Where Jane is always kind, always understanding, but firm where she needs to be; Lucy Snowe is depressed, surly, and almost impossible to like… but that’s the point.
