This is a hard book to read. Remember the Joe Jackson song "Everything gives you Cancer?" It's true. Better living through chemistry has permeated the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe with carcinogens. I've been somewhat aware of this for years but it was always white noise in the background...and the current "administration" seems intent on undoing all the protective laws it can.

I've got reservations about starting this when I'm in kind of a funk. I like his stuff but it can mess with the emotions.

Slight delay in reading this- it is the library's copy in the New Books section- with a limited check-out period. Between my usual plodding progress in reading memoirs, other people checking it out, and starting other books in the meantime it may take a while to finish!

My WWII veteran and English teaching father, who died in 2004- loved this book and suggested I read it on several occasions. I've always resisted because it's set in verse form. OK Dad, I'm finally reading it. Your pencilled-in notes make me feel like I'm conversing with you. Miss you.
