It's official. I need the whole book done in Sarkis' voice. I like it. At least it removes some confusion I had. For the first bit, I was just like...this? THIS? This and this author has had THE BUZZ for years and the writing is THIS??? But now that we have Sarkis POV, T. Kingfisher is a talented writer, just made Halla hella annoying.

I'm going to try for Sarkis' sake, but my god our FMC is ANNOYING. What is it about romance books that in order to "balance" out the book, we have dreamy, sexy male characters and female characters that are like nails on a chalkboard?

I feel bad doing this, but I'm going to start skimming. There is some very interesting stuff in here, but by being a good historian, there are so many gaps and contradictions. Even more egregious is the name dropping of famous people. It may be technically relevant, but I want HER life story, not a lengthy society page/family geneaology. Just starting to feel stuck and want to move on in the new month.

Feeling conflicted about the writing style. One minute, I'm loving the humour, the next, I just want Halla to stop talking for heavens sake

Minor complaint: Don't use lips curling to both signify smiling and disgust.

I think this one is going to fall into the infuriating pile of "not very good but it makes me kick my feet". AKA Ravyn is 100% my cup of piping hot tea.
Also, Elspeth is dumb as a bag of rocks sometimes and infuriating.

Also...why does her breath rattle??? ALL THE TIME. Does she suffer from consumption?

Oh no....no.....why is she uncomfortable without a dress??? WHY???? Can we please put this trope in the dustbin. Even just a 10 year long storage would be good.

Apparently Elspeth cannot go outside without twigs either accidentally or purposefully finding their way into her hair.

This girl doesn't eat! Every time there's a chance to, she's too upset. Lord bless me. And she doesn't even send for something in the middle of the night or sneak down to the kitchens.

Also, there's something about the Yew family, and particularly Jespyr, that is constantly reminding me of the Cullen family from Twilight.

...Why would any of her family or propriety be okay with her leaving directly from the castle to the estate? I think there should have at least been a return to one of her family's home and a formal meeting before she's allowed to leave. 3) Similar complaint, things just HAPPEN. Boom, boom, boom. No rest and anticipation. Reads a lot like a fanfiction with more polish...4)...I do really like Ravyn...alot

I'm still enjoying overall, but the YA/early career writing is sticking out more and more to me. 1) She is insisting that everyone else is utterly truthful to her, while actively hiding some VERY BIG secrets, and getting irrationally angry and Ravyn for not telling her "everything" when they haven't known each other more than 48 hours. 2) Her just getting swept off the Yew estate that night?.../2

I'm having a very hard time. Twain is, occasionally, shockingly modern in his humour and it can be so good to have these glimpses of people always being the same. But his racism is extreme, his misogyny plain as the nose on my face, and ableism easily found. Some anecdotes are marvelous and delightful, others make me want to roll my eyes or as dry as figures in an atlas. We shall see....
