Strangely enough I find the tone of this book unfortunately patronizing, but I think it has to do with the overt expressions of how “I was a victim” and “I’m sorry you went through that”. There’s just something about this compassion that drives me up the wall, but again, this is a personal preference. I’d rather someone just lay it out to me what affects me without emphasizing how “sad” my life is.

I have never loved a writing style so much until this book. She really reminds me of Naomi Novik, but Naomi writes more in long winded sentences. This one just makes me feel like I’m living in a really well done description, so really it’s just hard escapism

Now that I think about it isn’t it kind of screwed up that the MC wants to date the changeling version of his childhood best friend? Also not to minimize his grief over losing his best friend, but I find it strange that he’s still hung up over a love story that he had when he was 13 years old. I get it why he grieves over losing her in a horrific way, but the love was weird to carry over.

It’s been a fat minute since I read this book so I’m going to have to resume it because I’m pretty sure I stopped at 40% and kind of clocked out. Not cause it’s a bad book!! Just I was like lazy asf and need to pick it up again.

…also is it bad that the only thing I remember from this book is “omg extra rooms” and “omg scary halls” and “Jesus CHRIST this is a lot of Freudian sex please save me”

I’m gonna be honest how we went from magic Hunger Games to a whoddunit plot really threw me off and I have opinions about this, but I’m crossing my fingers that they redeem themselves in this last 15% because I’m dragging SO HARD and hoping that this MF pulls through so that I can feel like, 50% less bitter about the fact that I’ve been reading this over a week instead of one sitting (which I almost did)

Listening to this as an audiobook really reminds me on how dramatic the old Englishmen were when talking to other people 😭😭😭

I’m surprised how long the author’s note actually went. So far, it sounds like he’s basically summarized the entire book in his 40 page note about what he thinks the author wrote about. Regardless it’s an interesting premise so far—the book is so far hung up on the philosophy of enlightenment in education and class disparity. Still trying to hunt for more.
