I'm actually listening to the Graphic Audio, which is divided into two parts, but I refuse to catalog it that way. I am now more than halfway through the second part. This is basically Shadowrun: The Novelization, not at all what I was given to expect from my DNF of ACOTAR years ago.

There's some real audacity in naming one of your characters Tea Cake and then having your characters explicitly clarify that it is not a reference to Their Eyes Were Watching God

This is probably the best book I've deliberately chosen to DNF. I read about 1/3 and I'm confident that it will be somewhere between fine and decent, but at this point I just don't care to continue. Perhaps when the full trilogy is out, but there is something just a bit too contrived about the plot and writing, at both the micro- and macro-level.

Starting this today, after feeling only ho hum about Jade City. Everyone tells me the trilogy just picks up as it goes, so I'm willing to give it a shot.

Wild that people are describing this as "a scifi novel embedded in a non-SF novel." That's inaccurate. It's a scifi novel embedded in a scifi novel.

Really enjoying reading through this at a slow pace and going in totally unaware. The early medieval feel of the writing is palpable.

Completed the first chapter while getting my steps in. Doing my best to read it with an Old English accent in my head.
