TFW you already know you’re reading one of the best novels of the century thus far. This narrator ranks up there with Remains of the Day and Demon Copperhead. What initially seemed like a daunting 1200+ pages now looks not long enough!

God it’s so long. I’m tempted to give the new DNF feature a spin but I’m going to try to keep going. It’s good, I’m just not sure it’s good enough enough to be this gd long.

Hard not to love a book with the line “You killed our pig—what kind of wild slut are you?”

I’m tearing through this too fast so I can get on here and RAVE about it, so I’m updating progress as a vent on my enthusiasm about this absolutely spectacular and totally unique masterpiece of true crime of all sorts—serial, industrial, cultural, etc. I’ll have more to say when I’m done!

Every now and then, just the right background music is playing while you’re reading exactly the right passage at precisely the right moment in time and space, and you can almost hear Jeff Bridges or Sigourney Weaver narrating what you’re reading into the world. And this one might just be replicable…so do yourself a favor and read chapter 34 (3 pages) while listening to “Rose Bay,” by Ludovico Einaudi.
