I know we’re talking about hair but this idea that brown physical features are dull and lank is so pervasive in literature it drummed me crazy

I mean this is like 5 degrees away from being a book whose world building is set dressing for the romantic plotting. Not quite, but on the spectrum of that vibe for sure

I think the world is very rich but the author is spending lots of page time describing various orgies in every new scene like we get it

Apparently I’m meant to spend a year reading this book
lol at the character whose magical ability is being able to locate his dad, I have the opposite of whatever that is bahaha

It’s kind of a head trip that Lynne is basically the same character as Jeanne from Lions of Al Rassan, they’re starting to get mixed up in my head. Time to take a break from fantasy after I finish these

I listened to shadow hunters book 1, but i consider this my first “real” Cassandra Clare… and I almost feel the writing style is a little *overly* descriptive in a way that’s not my favorite.

It’s good writing, I’m just learning I prefer a less descriptive style w more focus on characterization. However, the setup for the world and the players is in a fabulous place to build from here

I’m not sure if this is an actual genre , but this book along with mask of mirrors feels like a sub genre of urban fantasy.

I’m not sure if “high urban fantasy” is a thing?

Yeah I’m learning I don’t care about overly detailed clothing descriptions in books at all. Especially when it’s high fantasy like this: inspired by some vague, indistinguishable historical period. Like I have no idea what y’all got on

So the woman voicing the main girl sounds like she’s about to burst into tears at any moment

And it’s kind of funny that I’m reading 2 fantasy books at the same time with marginalized physician FMCs

IDK. The writing is fabulous and GGKs character work/POVs are incredible as always, but for a book with themes around religion and religious extremism, if I was an alien who had never heard of the world’s 3 major religions or studied history and didn’t pick up the allegory, I would be like…why are they fighting? But maybe that’s the point?

Definitely slower paced than Tigana and the vibes are very “of course we want to wage holy wars” without a lot of on page description of how the religions operate/ their core beliefs.

So it does feel as the reader, i have to rely on what i know the irl religious allegory is supposed to represent in order to resonate with the depth of the character’s convictions vs having substantial world building

What else can be said. Orbit knows what they’re doing and the hype is real

I love how every single book no matter the genre is like: here is a new and innovative way the father character betrays, abuses & abandons his children. Horrible fathers are are the primordial villain origin story lol

Okay so the Grisaverse comparison I made was not really fair, this reads much much more cozier and lighter in tone than that series

This book is also just playing with story, narrator, POV, motivations and how to present the narrative- I’ve never read anything like this before

A high fantasy book where the female main character isn’t some super fighter/assassin/ master archer and is like omg why do I need to fight this 6’5 muscled alpha male… I think we all know I’m doomed. Refreshing as shit

The music between every part of the book and the weird echo thing when the birds talk — I love when audiobooks experiment for the sake of storytelling.

Also love how the female narrator doesn’t do that annoying ab narrator thing when reading male characters where they speak really slow or do a fake deep voice (for the purposes of making them sound sexy)! She’s injecting playfulness for Cain’s voice and sternness in the emperor’s etc that conveys masculinity without feeling shallow
