Honest acknowledgement of our wrongdoings is correct, and rightly leads to guilt - but this can only lead to despair if we do not immediately then go to the solution, the Cross. A proper diagnosis of our spiritual illness is essential, and a wilful ignoring of our sickly condition is deadly, but then we must go straight away to the remedy, to the Great Physician, to Christ. Sin, guilt, repentance, forgiveness, life.

Holland isn't a Bible scholar and it shows as he seems to carelessly adopt the mainstream (yet erroneous) secular historical views of the Jewish Scriptures and, whilst this can be a bit frustrating, he does seem to grasp some key features of the Jewish religion - but nothing new has been said tbh (although I am sure that he is building up to a point lol). He writes okayish, not scholarly like. Shall see how it goes.

the canon wasnt some later ecclesiastical invention, the Jewish groundwork of early Christianity and the nature of Jesus' instructions concerning Apostolic authority provided a very favourable environment for a set of authoritative Scriptures to emerge. the canon was inevitable from the start. veryveryveryverycool👌👌.

very cool so far.

the canon isnt just the product of load of bearded-men in a room deciding which books to treat as holy Scripture or not, but it also isn't just a load of golden tablets that have been nicely handed down to us. the new testament canon has it's divine source, but it took genuine, human time for it to become a part of messy, everyday life - and for it to be fully recognised as authoritative. epic.

my guy doesn't even bother to make arguments half the time, he just lists off what papists had been saying - their arguments for the 'veneration' of images being so completely and clearly nothing but idolatrous nonsense.

this is INSANE. calvin simply does not care and is just absolutely wilding on the roman catholic church this is mad. it's going to take me ages to read cause im bad, but i can already see the complete unashamedness and scriptural proficiency of calvin in this, and ive only read the introduction!!!! translation is also (fairly) easy to read so far, but glad for the dictionary function on the kindle lol.

Marianne, what do you mean "My...eagerness ... to have time for atonement to my God..."? Do you not know that the blood of Christ poured out for you has settled every debt in full? What atonement can you make that He has not already made on your behalf, if your trust be in Him?

(And yet again, oh poor Elinor! 😭)

Who sent Christ to the Cross?

"I did it, my sins sent Him there."
"He did it, His love took Him there."

tldr; the apostles and early christians didn't shy away from proclaiming and glorying in the cross, what the roman and jewish worlds deemed utter shame. the sacrifice of atonement is the centre of all history. the holy God who died to reconcile us to Him. the scorn of the cross is foolishness to many (see Nietzsche). faith in the Mediator, a revealed atonement, is christianity itself. we are reconciled to Him by it.
