Good m/m in the year of our Lord 2024? It can actually happen!! Characters with dimensions, really good unapologetic kinky smut and a fun villain. Wheee!

It's the end of the year and I am giving the m/m genre one more shot. Ok, it is a little mean to do it with these authors - chances are VERY good this is going to suck. But hey, at least it's not 1st person?!

What is it with the 1st person pov in m/m Romance? Is straight Romance like that too? Do authors think we can't connect to a different gender unless we're in their heads? I'm ready to be done with the genre over this issue. I can't be the only person coming to the genre via fan fiction and being stunned that this is so prevalent when it is one of the biggest no-no's in fandom. The audiences can't be that different.

The worldbuilding is outstanding and terrifyingly possible. This is a hard book to read. I don't mind that - it's just that now the shape of things to come are forming in the distance and I don't know if I can do it right now. Sometimes you're not in the right headspace for the hard stuff.

I'm a horror wimp. I can do slashers but when it gets supernatural I just freak out too hard. So. Officially freaking out really hard.

Thought I'd try some Fantasy again. This is actually right up my alley thematically but if I manage to finish this I will have a lot to say.

Is there a good place to commiserate with fellow m/m readers about the miserable quality of the books being released today? Or maybe this post can be an invitation to anyone wanting to do a little venting with me. I just feel so defeated by the bad writing, bad editing, bad everything really.

I am willing to pay for my entertainment! Let me!

Went in completely blind, have no idea what the buzz about this book is. That said (spoilers)

...I didn't realize just how YA this would be. It took me an embarassing amount of time to figure the assignments out. Now that I'm on the books level it's obvious what's going on. I'm not sure I am in the mood to read any kind of redemption for fascists.

I skim read the entire 75% in one night because I wanted to get to the smutty bits. It was alright so far.

Hrrrnnngghhh. Right back in it and I don't want to stop reading!!

Seriously impressed by the writing and characterization in this one so far. Is this at long last finally a really good M/M read? Fingers crossed. Good God, that cover though.

Poor book. I just finished a really expansive space opera and this absolutely cannot hold a candle to it world-building wise. Also, that recent Crisp Rat movie where he is a soldier taken to fight an alien war in future? Is this the book they got the idea from? Because it makes the first 30% absolutely unneccessary.

The percentage is a guesstimate. Anyway I just hit a FUCKING HELL revelation, so people who have finished reading will know. Unless there is even more to come. Which... is entirely possible and I am scared and horny about it. This series, man.

It's alright so far. Not getting the hype.

Not going to read M/M books by authors who obviously haven't even watched The Godfather for research. It's not Mafia. It's the Mob, the Family, La Cosa Nostra or just a gesture. And the people in it DEFINITELY would not refer to it as Mafia.

So I see "Something, something a dark mafia romance" and am out already.

It's readable which is the extent of my expectations for M/M these days. But oh will I have things to say in my review...

Tbh I don't get the hype. So far I haven't met a character I'm blown away by, the worldbuilding is interesting but also nothing really new. I'm intrigued by the setting but it's a slog.

Started out intriguing but is now already taking a plunge in quality. Meh.
