You know how 80 things on hold at the library always become available all at the same time? So I ran out of time before I could finish. Now to wait for another forever to finish this fine book.

This is one of the 5 books I consider my greatest influences. I love the blended/vague genre of poetry/memoir, I love her strange somewhat distorted imagery (colors are people, colors are days, i.e.), and I love the playful, spirited (sometimes matter-of-fact) tone that never wavers--when the story gets heavy, the tone lifts it out of melodrama.

Reading again, 23 years after it inspired my poetry thesis for my MFA

So oops. I meant to check out the first book in the series after searching for this book (#18) because it was recommended by reader with good taste Ellen (holla!). I got almost halfway through it before I realized it wasn't the first book and that was why I was a bit confused about characters' shared history. Stopped reading and started the first book. But I was deep enough in that I have to finish it now!!

I'm reading this very slowly via listening to "The Sleepy Bookshelf" podcast. Which is awesome and there are a handful of other books I think. The reader has a lovely calming yet engaging voice, and the after-ad intro is always accompanied by the Erik Satie piece that everyone recognizes when they hear it. I play it at 80% speed. Fellow insomniacs, this is for you!!

Time for another re-reading.

This is quite a good time to read either this book or 1984 or both. Eerie echoes of what we are hearing and seeing right now. Hate is a virtue so prized that everyone stops working to gather and scream hatred at whatever BB wants them to hate.

Another feminist take on the Canon, and so far a great one. I don't know if I'll ever get sick of these.
