Mark Rizk Farag is on page 145 of 227 of The Song of the Poor: And other stories from El Salvador
'Truth, justice, repentance and pardon (or amnesty, to use political language) is the correct human and Christian procedure in the case of the Jesuits and in every case of human rights abuse. Pardon should precede truth, justice and never sincere repentance.'

Sanderson is honestly a genius for managing to interweave this many perspectives and present them coherently and compellingly.

I certainly didn't expect Adolin's chapters and arc to be the most compelling 👀

'I used to preach hat the poor need justice, not charity. Charity is ineffectual; it's no good mopping up the floor while the tap continues to gush out water. The system needs renewing, I used to speak of getting to the cause of the problem and not being content with treating symptoms. ' Repair the fucking tap; don't mop the floor! Justice, not charity!' was the battle-cry...'

The amount of Western theology we have observed as Oriental Orthodox folk is crazy. Turns out we don't believe in Original Sin or Penal Substitution!

It is a testament to the fickle hearts of men that I forgot how good a writer Sanderson is.

Thoroughly interesting so far, and I love the representation of 'non traditional' families.

With that said, it is a bit jarring that so many different cultures are cited, just to seem to support the modern Western world view of the author.

So far, a brilliant theological work which is helping me decolonise my Christianity and better understand Oriental Orthodoxy.

A little heavy on the huge logical leaps from evolutionary science and some questionable interpretation of psychological studies. Otherwise interesting.

'Can it be that there is not enough space for man in this beautiful world, under those immeasurable, starry heavens? I it possible that man's heart can harbour. amid such ravishing natural beauty, feelings of hatred, vengeance, or the desire to destroy his fellows? All the evil in man, one would think, should disappear on contact with Nature, the most spontaneous expression of beauty and goodness.'

Varoufakis understands many topics. Ancient Egypt is evidently not one of them.

'The bread vou are holding back is for the hungry, the clothes vou keep put away are for the naked, the shoes that are rotting away with disuse are for those who have none, the silver you keep buried in the earth is for the needy. You are thus guilty of injustice toward as many as you might have aided, and did not.'

This would be considered very radical in our era.

'It has been part of the genius of neoliberal theory to proride a benevolent mask full of wonderful-sounding words like fredom, liberty, choice, and rights, to hide the grim realities of the restoration or reconstitution of naked class power, locally as well as transnationally, but most particularly in the main financial centres of global capitalism.'
