After being in the musical production of Les Miserables on two occasions I thought I was prepared for the impact of the novel. However, nothing can prepare you for the genius of Victor Hugo's original work. Even when Hugo strays away from the plot for chapters at a time, the mere casual reader remains engaged to his words. Les Miserables is worth the bear of a read.
