I have a few nitpicks with the book but I’m still deeply enjoying it and I need these circus queers to be okay!!! I also have no idea how they’re going to get out of this

Stressed by the crime boss but also endeared by the family of circus misfits vibes.

I need Jes to crush Nico Dax into a lump of flesh the size of cake.

Technically finally finished with this book but wanted one last accounting of the number of bigly tall descriptions, and to say that I actually got caught up enough in drama of the final 80% of the book that I forgot to count (not that there were many opportunities since Inez and Whit weren't on page together).

The redemption for the romance happened exactly as I thought it might (he tries to protect her, gets hurt, she realizes he does actually love her and starts to overcome her hurt feelings

Also, since I didn't have any room in my last update, Bigly Tall Counter: 30. The author calmed down considerably between the first book and this one. I wish half of the descriptions of Whit's height, physique had been differly used

The relationship drama was fun for a little while but I don’t know if they’re supposed to be pining now or what. Inez is sad because she’s so certain that Whit doesn’t love her and just writes off all his actions as selfishness, which is fair, but also doesn’t make me feel much of anything for them? She plans on divorcing him but I’ll believe it when I see it. Maybe that’s why this sadness is boring

Set ups in the first book paid off in good twists

As of chapter nine, bigly tall counter: 22. Even when Whit’s sudden but inevitable betrayal comes to light, we must never forget how immovable he is because of his big strongliness to her little ladiness.

I’m glad the author is living her best life enjoying height difference

"Xiphiidae" by Elliot Ason is short and sweet with some cool worldbuilding that's not the point at all but interesting regardless. The relationship is a bit shallow for the reader since it's both insta-love and something we don't get to see develop. But it's important to the characters so, fine, to be generous. Didn't make me mad.

The back and forth, will they won't, won't they, about the marriage is a little overdone. Unless something happens to physically prevent it, I've no doubt they'll be married. But there are nice moments of character work in the first few chapters.

And for kicks, I'll keep track of all mentions of Whit's bigly tallness. As of the prologue and first two chapters, we've got 6. Two in chapter 1 and four in chapter 2.

Finished "A Mermaid's Heart" and while some of the sentences were a little clunky, I overall enjoyed the subversion of a Little Mermaid inspired set up. The ending also contained the type of sentimentality that I enjoy.

The worldbuilding... I just want to spend more time in the universe Wong has created. Just finished the Interlude about Jes's grandfather and when Jes gains his empathic abilities. The description of both feeling love for someone and feeling that person's love for you at the same time T-T

I really, really wish this hadn’t been an enemies to lovers type of romance

Enjoying the worldbuilding and kind of found family vibes of the circus with the tension of Jes, Quint, and Essa having dinner with Essa's xenophobic family.

The whole thing about the cousin is weird and I imagine if won’t be resolved before the book is over since this is a series.

Also Isadora pointed a gun at you, time to stop trusting this woman now

On Chapter 18 and I don’t understand why Inez is so confused by Whit being distance when she literally overheard the conversation between him and her uncle where her uncle told Whit she was off limits and Whit said he wasn’t interested in her. Like obviously he’s trying to follow orders even though he also cares

I'm on Chapter 17 and have come to the realization that this book is essentially a pulp adventure story at it's heart. There is cheese everywhere but I'm enjoying it.
