Re-reading along w/my 11yo as I’ve realised a mini book club may encourage her to engage in books that may seem boring at first glance.

So far we’ve discussed how the ‘boring’ first chapter serves to set up the story as a whole in giving us a view of Jess’s life - if we empathise with him at all we are *so* ready for Leslie’s friendship to pull him out of it all.

brilliant so far, but when is kuang not? appreciating the perhaps subtle humour.

a negative critique headlined that the novel was an info dump - is this meant to be a drawback? loving it.

as a local, just immediately perplexed by Santa Clara University as a setting. Trying to withhold further assessment and see how it plays out, but feels off to me so far.

Contrary to all the 'unputdownable!' reviews, I reckon it took me 2-3 chapters to adjust to the author's voice - I very nearly walked away after the first page. I don't know if it was the first person voice or an excess of descriptive text that absolutely fits the context and character but I'm now 80% of the way through later the same evening so suffice it to say it is an enjoyable read in the end.
