I love Elizabeth Zott's character. Her personality is refreshing and honest.

"There's more at work here than you can imagine," Mrs. Ficke murmured. "You think you're hunting a lion. But it's the jungle what's hunting you both."

The details mentioned in this book about the time period make this an interesting read.

Pleasantly surprised with this one. Set in 1882, reading it in parallel with another book set in 1857 (but different locations!)

Planning to DNF, this has been my least favorite Freida McFadden read so far.

It was a form of naivete, he thought the way she continued to believe that all it took to get through life was grit. Sure, grit was critical, but it also took luck, and if luck wasn't available, then help. Everyone needed help.

"Look," he said, "life has never been fair, and yet you continue to operate as if it is - as if once you get a few wrongs straightened out, everything else will fall into place. They won't. You want my advice?"......."Don't work the system. Outsmart it."

He had been her person, and they'd passed books back and forth between them her entire life.
