I cannot wait until the end to comment on the greatness of this novel. Pontmercy is dead on page 567. The plundering of Pontmercy's garden echoes Thenardier's looting of Pontmercy's ring hand and other valuables on the Waterloo battlefield; and Pontmercy's misrecognition of Thenardier's motives and character; and now he entrusts Thenardier to his son destined to meet Cosette. Such rich irony!
