Prose poem, imaginative, fresh. Themes of war, exile, loneliness, death, finding meaning and purpose in a life lived, and especially a death sacrificed, and the narcissism of being good, the narcissism of it all. I have some opinions on the clearly online, politically correct but rarely selfless emo tumblr hipster self insert by the author.

Ernaux has a way with her one liners: I realize that I am forever combing reality for signs of literature.

My rendezvous with the millennium city. Ernaux observes, lets emotions arise within her, and writes the snapshot down. It’s like walking down a street full of suburban houses and the window giving a peek of the interiors. That’s the key, her observation aren’t intimate, but interior, both into the people, places, objects, and herself.

Finally found the crow cawing (symbolic of fate). Oh Hijiri I loved your feminism and no-nonsense opinions so much, why’d you have to go ahead and force yourself on Fuyuko and project like that?

Trying to gather what Kawakami is stating with Irie and Ishikawa.
Physics of Light & Colours symbolic for original & derived opinions, thoughts, feelings — think social aspects of a physical phenomenon.
The magical realism used is not subtle but select, exercised as a writing technique to illuminate the protagonist’s lackluster life and infuse it with vivacity, via her limerence-enraptured imagination

Fuyuko Irie is written to be so lifeless… Who is Mitsutsuka, and why is he so boring? Why do modern contemporary Japanese fiction show such restraint between connections of yhe opposite gender? Love it when Fuyuko talks to Hijiri… Hijiri’s got some points to make about a working woman and her feminism!

Shelving it. I picked this book only because of her associations with John Mayer whom I had a near-parasocial realtionship with. I was jealous that she could be young, pretty, rich, privileged, mentally ill, anxious & self-conscious, and was a writer. I was weird, I know, I don’t care. I would still like to read this book because I find this vapid genre cheap & fun entertainment but I completely forgot about it.

Bought it because Omkar said he would re-read it with me. A week later the copy arrived, and I'm left high & dry. I take this with me everywhere, to work, to the park, to the loo. Underwhelming read but I continue to read it for some perverse pleasure. I hate how he writes his characters, especially the women but I can see some cultural context is missing. It hits the right notes when talking about music and nature.

lot has happened. in this book & in my life. my talking stage or whatever ended, which made me grief-stricken on how/why did it begin in the first place. it was wonderful to get to know someone though. i'm forgetting i had a reason to get out of bed in the morning. it's a shame they aren't my friend.

As with Quichotte, not the book I'd pick up easily but boy am i glad i did. The prose and plot is so smart.

Music - a meditation on the musicality of a bustling new york city balanced on the pin prick of a moment in midwinter early afternoon at lunch hour, and associated emotions.

"I'm naked as a table cloth, my nerves humming."
"...gusts of water spray over the basins of leaves /
like the hammers of a glass pianoforte. If I seem to you /
to have lavender lips under the leaves of the world, /
I must tighten my belt."

The inimitable Salma R's backstory! (Side note: I think I should give myself a little credit. Being funny about reading a book for dick is cool, but it wasn't coming out of just a lighthearted humorous poke at the self, but also from internalised shame and self-esteem issues. I like a person, I want to know them, talk to them, this one of my ways of showing interest. What's so wrong? Plus I'm so smart!!!

Interesting to read Perowne describe her mother. I relate to her a lot in her dementia-induced jabber that completely makes sense somehow.

Kinda don't wanna read this book anymore because I relate to her and she is a terf and I do not want to be a transphobe. I do not have the critical thinking skills. All I have is empathy.

Slow, steady, delicious prose. Meticulous in building a character. Lot of musings without transgressions. Writing style is different to my usual choices, but similar enough to maintain interest alongside novelty and curiosity. Henry Perowne seems like a stoic welll-educated upper class man. He is super intelligent and diligent, so is his family. I don't know where we are heading.
