The narrator goes to a women's house after he gives a speech. She seduces him to sleep with her. Her husband comes home, however, he does not seem too upset.

The narrator gives a speech at a convention, and it is very passionate. However, those of the Brotherhood believe he did a bad job. He is therefore sent out of Harlem for additional training.

The narrator faints in the middle of the street. Then, he is taken in by a woman named Mary. He returns to the Men's House, and baptistes a reverend, causing him to be banned from that location.

The narrator stumbles upon a union meeting. They argue about letting him join when he wants to retrieve his pork chop sandwich. Then, the narrator is about to get into a fight with Brockway.

The narrator talks with Mr. Emerson's son, who tells him that he should think of studying elsewhere. Then, he tells the narrator that he shouldn't return to the university. Finally, the narrator reads the letters that Dr. Bledsoe sent out, and Dr. Bledsoe officially expelled him.

The narrator's job applications are rejected, except for one. As he is traveling to Mr. Emerson's office, he meets a man singing a strange song. He goes to a restaurant, and the cook immediately guesses that he is from the south.

The narrator is headed to Harlem after Dr. Bledsoe tells him to leave campus after what happened to Mr. Norton. The narrator arrives in Harlem, and is instantly in awe, but also confused. There is a protest by black men going on in the street, and the white police officers don't seem to care.

The narrator must attend a church service. Here, the story of the founder is told. He compares the head of the university to a Black Buddha, which I think is interesting. Then, a reverend from Chicago begins speaking.

The narrator is worried about being expelled due to the condition of Mr. Norton. However, Mr. Norton defends him. The narrator is still concerned, however, with his fate in regard to the headmaster.

The narrator takes Mr. Norton into a bar to get him a drink. Mr. Norton almost dies, but then he eventually feels better. However, when another fight breaks out, he goes into his state of illness again. He begins talking with one of the patients that used to be a doctor. The narrator really wants to leave.

Trueblood tells the narrator and the wealthy man how he got his daughter pregnant. He explains his dream. The millionaire is disgusted yet fascinated.

Esther loses her virginity and thinks she is dying. Joan hangs herself, and Esther does not seem too distressed. Buddy visits Esther, and h makes her shovel snow. Esther discusses with the doctors her leaving.

Esther is transferred to a new mental hospital. Joan is there, and all the women seem like they are well. Esther doesn't like it much there, and she doesn't seem to be recovering.

Esther goes to a new mental hospital which seems much more pleasant. The novel's name is referenced, with Esther stating that she feels like she is trapped in a "bell jar." Joan is in Esther's mental hospital.

Esther describes her various suicide attempts. She goes on an outing with Joan and meets a guy named Cal. She escapes him and tries to drown herself. She then sits at the beach and debates suicide.

Esther begins seeing a psychiatrist, and he suggests she receive shock therapy. Before that, she meets a young sailor in Boston and strolls around the city with him. After her first round of shock therapy, Esther refuses to see the psychiatrist again.

Esther goes on a date with Marco, who is a misogynist and he tries to rape her. She leaves New York the next morning and heads to the suburbs. She does not get into the prestigious summer writing course she applied to, which leaves her feeling extremely depressed.

Esther explains how she broke things off with Buddy and prevented getting judged by her college classmates. She stated that Buddy had TB, therefore she just told people this and they left her alone. She is enjoying her date with Constantin, and she wants to sleep with him to get even with Buddy.

Esther tells the story of her relationship with Buddy Willard and explains how she grew to not like him. He invited her to the Yale Junior Prom, where they had their first kiss. She went to visit him in medical school and watched a baby being born the day she shadowed him. He appeared to be a nice Christian man, but Esther finds out that he is not a virgin.

We find out that the main character's name is Esther Greenwood. She gets poisoned at a Ladies' Day luncheon from crabmeat salad. This created dramatic irony because she was talking about how she would rather have her grandfather's avocado pear sauce than crabmeat, and then she is later poisoned. Doreen didn't go to the luncheon so she has to care for all of the sick girls. She brings Esther soup.

Doreen is dropped off outside Sylvia's door, and she vomits on the ground. Sylvia decides to distance herself from Doreen, but we later see her regret this. Sylvia goes to a luncheon, and she eats a lot of caviar.

Sylvia goes with Doreen to meet these two guys at a bar, and Doreen grows fond of the guy Lenny, while Sylvia doesn't care for Frankie, she thinks he's too short. Doreen goes back to Lenny's house, and Sylvia follows, going by the name of Elly. Then, Sylvia goes back home and we see her go into a depressive state.

They review Newspeak, it is a lot similar to Spanish. It is used to limit thought and individuality. It creates a very ignorant language that prevents scholarship.

Winston's life has improved drastically. He sees Julia again, and since he wished the rats upon her, he no longer loves her. She also wished bad things upon him to prevent something bad from happening to her. She states that once this happens, all love is gone. Winston finally develops feelings of love for Big Brother. Newspeak is then explained.

Winston sees himself in the mirror for the first time in months, maybe even years. He is repulsed by what he looks like, and O'Brien proposes a society that is even more regulated than the one now. Winston starts receiving better care, he is given dentures and ointment for his varicose ulcer.

Winston is being tortured, and while he thinks that he is being punished, O'Brien tells him that he is being reformed. He is told to obey every wish of the Party, and believe everything they tell him. He is told that Julia sold him out.

Winston and Julia are caught, and there was a hidden telescreen in their room. They are separated and Winston ends up in the Ministry of Love. Nothing has happened to him yet. Parsons is in jail with him, he was accused of thoughtcrime.

Winston tells Julia that he has the book, and she does not seem very excited. He states that after a war is fought for so long, it is no longer dangerous. He also talks about some of the reasons why these territories may be disputed.

Winston now has possession of the secret book. He enjoys being able to freely read without someone watching him. He reads Goldstein's book and learns which countries are at war with each other.

O'Brien asks Winston and Julia to join his rebellion. Winston and Julia agree to do horrible things to take down the party, however, they do not agree to be separated. Winston hears a plan for him to receive Goldstein's book in 14 days.
