They review Newspeak, it is a lot similar to Spanish. It is used to limit thought and individuality. It creates a very ignorant language that prevents scholarship.

Winston's life has improved drastically. He sees Julia again, and since he wished the rats upon her, he no longer loves her. She also wished bad things upon him to prevent something bad from happening to her. She states that once this happens, all love is gone. Winston finally develops feelings of love for Big Brother. Newspeak is then explained.

Winston sees himself in the mirror for the first time in months, maybe even years. He is repulsed by what he looks like, and O'Brien proposes a society that is even more regulated than the one now. Winston starts receiving better care, he is given dentures and ointment for his varicose ulcer.

Winston is being tortured, and while he thinks that he is being punished, O'Brien tells him that he is being reformed. He is told to obey every wish of the Party, and believe everything they tell him. He is told that Julia sold him out.

Winston has a horrible dream that he cannot recall. Julia asks him what the problem is, and he tells her about his mother and stories of him as a child. He was very greedy as a kid and always attempted to steal food from his mother or sister. He stole his dying sister's chocolate ration from her. The more I know about Winston, the less I like him.

Winston and Julia sneak away to the room above Mr. Carrington's garage. Winston loves Julia now, and no longer sees being with her as an act of rebellion, but as an act of love. Julia brings makeup, coffee, bread, and jam. Winston's varicose ulcer is going away.
