"Two Gallants" has to be my favorite so far!

The tale of "Daniel O'Rourke" by T. Crofton Croker has got to be one of the most hilarious short stories I've ever read. The jokes are so comical and at times absurd that it's hard to believe one is reading a folktale.

The short story "Teig O'Kane and the Corpse" (or "Tadhg O'Cathain agus an Corpan" in Irish) is a lovely and memorable piece of fairytale. I think it might showcase what I believe is the double duty that the fairies perform in Irish folklore: whimsical and mischievous, but ultimately a source of good.

«مردم ناگهان دیدند پرچم‌های مغول بر بارۀ بغداد نمایان گشت و برجی که کنار یکی از دروازه‌های شهر به نام دروازۀ کلواذی قرار داشت و آن را برج عجمی می‌گفتند، اشغال شد. چون برج مذکور کوتاه‌ترین برج بارۀ بغداد بود، مغول‌ها از آنجا هجوم کردند و وارد شهر شدند.» سرانجام دور روزگار چنان گردید که دشمن از «برج عجمی» وارد بغداد شود.

وقایع بین آغاز حملۀ مغول تا مرگ جلال‌الدین خیلی جالبه و در این کتاب هم خوب شرح داده شده.

Finished the first part of the book which deals with the post-Chalcedonian Christian communities of the Middle East before the Arab conquests.
The bibliography in this book is just insane. My huge respect to Prof. Tannous for that.

In short, the first three chapters deal with everyday life trumping religious belief.

I've read, out of the order of the book, the following stories so far:

Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family
The Call of Cthulhu
The Colour Out of Space
The Shadow Over Innsmouth

This book just keeps on nuancing itself. Incredibly well-thought-out and thorough.

Excited to finally be able to read this fascinating book from start to finish.

«میرزا هاشم‌خان یک روز مرا ملاقات کرد و گفت: آخر شماها چرا باید تنها آخوند باشید، مگر دیانت از آگاهی و بصیرت مانع است؟ خوب است لامحاله رمان بخوانید. پرسیدم: رمان چیست؟ گفت: کتاب حکایت را می‌گویند که در فرنگستان رسم است. [...] گفتم: من که زبان فرنگی نمی‌دانم. گفت: چند کتاب ترجمه شده آشکار هم هست. من می‌دهم بخوانید. پس کتاب سه تفنگدار را جلد اوّل و دویّم و سوّم محرمانه خواندم و وضع غریبی در ادای مطلب و طرز نوشتن دیدم.»

انتقاد بی‌پرده‌ای که شیخ ابراهیم از تمامیت و ایدۀ روحانیت شیعی می‌کنه نسبت به زمان خودش خیلی پیشرو به‌نظر می‌رسه. این حرفاش مبنی بر اینکه تنها معیار علم و تقواست (و نه به هیچ وجه آخوند بودن یا نبودن)، در ارتباط با صدور حکم اعدام برای شیخ فضل‌الله توسط نویسنده شاید معنای غنی‌تری پیدا کنه.

مقالات سیدنی گریفیت عزیزم و کوین فان بلادل در این مجموعه، نمونۀ اعلای نویسندگیِ آکادمیک هستن. شفافیت و قدرت استدلالی بالایی دارن. خواننده رو به‌خوبی در یک مسیر مناسب هدایت می‌کنن تا به نتیجه برسن. امید که خودم هم وقتی می‌نویسم اینطور بنویسم.
