Oopsies he's made a factual error - "It wasn't until centuries later [after Greek theatre], after the Renaissance, that the church resurrected theatre in the form of miracle [aka mystery] plays." Um actually those plays had been carrying on through the Medieval times and then onwards.

Would have been nice to be given this book earlier in the whole PhD process but anyway. I was hoping for more guidance on how to work out what the "red thread" of the narrative should be, but very useful stuff for paragraphs and structure

Ok that was unpleasant

Oopsie I borrowed this from someone last September and I have 10 days in which to save my honour (ie read it before I see them next)

Ok having read the main negative review, I disagree. The author says that questioning animal consciousness *given* that the Declaration on Consciousness and the precautionary principle already exist and *assuming* they are adhered to as regards animal welfare, *further* investigation is unlikely to harm them.

Intrigued to get to the end of this and see what the two negative reviews are about – so far so interesting imo

I fear this is getting put back on the shelf until my thesis is finished, reading about my own lecturers in my free time is getting too much

Clearly massively behind on which writers I should actually be giving attention to, why did I not read this earlier??

This is very enjoyable but too much like work, so alas it is getting left behind for 3 weeks while I am away.

Improving

How I feel about this book at the end is going to depend a lot on how the personal journey goes I think – and also what the author learns about and from the butterflies. I forget I live in a bubble of people who know a lot about butterflies, who have written whole dissertations and theses about them; reading the perspective of someone who knows so little feels (unfairly)a bit trying at times.

I need to pick better books to read. This and The Poppy War while watching the Handmaid's Tale is doing my head in (and my soul).
