By chance and because I don't look into books much before I read them, I seem to have brought an assortment of semi-dystopian/apocalyptic books with me. Coupled with watching The Handmaid's Tale, it's getting a bit depressing. But! This is good. I like the writing style a lot.

Made sceptical by the blurb, even more sceptical from the first few pages, but enjoying it now and intrigued to see where it all ends up.

Not to start being an apologist for zoos, and I do appreciate this particular essay was written in 1977, but a zoo's primary function is conservation, and then perhaps education - not merely for an animal to be "seen" and thus marginalised. No doubt in the 70s zoos were not as good as they are today, and today they're still not good enough, but I do not view animals as "less" because they are enclosed.

I like the writing style but by gum has this man been a silly twit. I'm hoping it will look up from here, but still a third of the book to go so would seem unlikely.
