Costly requirements in religion/sects (rules on diet, donations, marriage) is correlated with longer lasting communes. But is that just because people who are more likely to conform in the first place are going to be more dedicated? If I don't believe in something it doesn't matter whether the cost is £5 or £100, I wouldn't give it. And then there's the sunk cost - even if you stop believing, you've invested so much.
