A story with so much potential for drama and insight, unfortunately seems to aim for the latter at the expense of the former.

really delves into a cardboard cutout character, chip. He earnestly asks what if this cartoon character was actually real? How would that work? How would people react to him? What might his hang ups be?
This is very different than trying to “pin a motive on the donkey,” and sent the person on a journey to resolve a conflict. By p 46 he is singular, and, what makes us singular is our misfortunes.

If another hirsute person reaches for a ‘bag of crisps’ in this novel, I’m going to downgrade my review by one star.
