It’s a good reminder that you can arrange a story around your strengths as a writer. The potagonist seems by their work and their motive like they would talk in dry, matter of fact ways, peppering the storyline with insights about the way the world is the way people are, even talking about sex as though it is reportage.

Scare quotes, the quotes of the barely literate, the elevated wine and a hum drum landscape with gas stations in view; Prometheus and how fire functions for a traitless animal, Neanderthals who were smokers, pictured in various contemporary frames, the truth about migration patterns. Racing toward extinction in a driverless car.

A story with so much potential for drama and insight, unfortunately seems to aim for the latter at the expense of the former.

This is very different than trying to “pin a motive on the donkey,” and sent the person on a journey to resolve a conflict. By p 46 he is singular, and, what makes us singular is our misfortunes.

If another hirsute person reaches for a ‘bag of crisps’ in this novel, I’m going to downgrade my review by one star.
