Both excellent. “Encounter” especially. Deserves to be read again and again.

2. “How Tracy Austin Broke My Heart": Perhaps the best sports essay i’ve ever read and certainly the best book review. Funny enough, the thesis of this essay applies best to hockey despite never being mentioned. I feel Connor McDavid can only be understood in the context of this essay.

1. “Consider the Lobster”: well written but stupid. a attempted moral argument that says (in a roundabout “i’m not saying anything” way) that eating lobsters may be bad b/c they have a nervous system & feel pain. Despite being absurdly long, it shies away from such questions as “what is bad?” & “what is good?” until the final paragraph, when it says such questions are beyond the purview of the essay

this guy was awesome. fluent in latin & greek. translated virgil, ovid, etc. wrote poetry. had undiagnosed Tourettes - broke into random outbursts. slam-dunked on yappers on the daily. corresponded with alexander pope.

nipple plot twist! might be saving this book from a one-star review!

i think i know where this is going. getting some black mirror vibes. very meat and potatoes — by that i just mean nothing original.

goodreads doesn’t let you pick a birth year before 1927. what is this? are they saying nobody on goodreads could possibly be born before 1927? my grandma was born in 1925 and is an avid reader i can assure you!! she is reading something called “Purgatory” right now.

it has come to my attention that, many years ago, before my frontal lobe was finished developing, i rated The Hobbit a mere 3/5 stars.

this is UNACCEPTABLE and i apologize profusely!!

needless to say, i must’ve been under the influence of some foreign, mind-altering substance at the time, for this book was more formative in my youth than any other. i read it no less than 4 times. this is 5 ⭐️

All nationalistic sentimentalism aside, it is wild how many tactics Canada innovated in WWI (highly accurate artillery strikes, trench raids) that were later adopted by every nation fighting in WW2.
