This is the most important minion again. Can you imagine how ridiculous it would look and sound in reality?

I'm starting to think it's ridiculous on purpose, because it doesn't make sense otherwise.

“That chair is reserved for the Light Bringer of Merlin’s prophecy.” Jen was quiet for a moment. “I wish we could know who he or she is.”

Calling a second thing, this heralded hero will be MC. 1000000%

“Hey,” Jen said, sitting up straighter. “Don’t hate the sorceress, hate the magic.” “Oh, that’s good.” Gavin snickered."

Is it, is it really?

Anyway, calling it now, the amnesiac is her father, the cat is related to him and might be her mother.

"He was not about to give up, and neither was Skarmor, so they pursued Draconex until dawn broke over the mountainside and gave shadows to the cluttered trees in the forest below."

This is the level of feeling and telling instead of showing of our big chase scene.
I already know my rating, but I'm debating whether to give an indie a 2 star or be kind and omit rating. What would you do?

“I am Lord Draconex. Big fan.”

Why would the most important minion of our big bad, who 99% won't be active in this book, say lines as cheesy as this one? This is him speaking to the MC.
He may well be, but I'm not a fan. I wasn't scared or creeped out by him, he's quite generic, but now I'm actively cringing.

“They already know that you are an omnimancer, so don’t be afraid to hold back."

Setting aside the names, 🤐, shouldn't she be ready to NOT hold back?
This doesn't make sense.
I was hoping I'd be supporting an indie author, instead I'm suffering through the book.

"Malcolm could only see the tip of Draconex’s nose, the only part of his face that was not enveloped in a shadow-filled abyss from the hood resting upon his head."

I'm sorry, but I'm 100% picturing Pinocchio and his long nose hidden under the hood.
That would at least make it fun.

“Ah, yes! El Tovar . . . thanks, sweetheart.” He put his hand in hers and squeezed. “They have the best sautéed duck breast.”

This is when mom&dad are telling the heroine, she's... Spoilers, adopted! In a book where we don't have detailed descriptions about locations, places, people (evil grin was a fun description). Too much detail when not needed.

But once she stood up, her right side split in hot agony. Yelling in pain, she crumpled to the floor and crawled back until she bumped into the back wall. “Who . . . who are you?” Jen stammered, still reeling from her blasting headache.

Girl, a headache is the least of your problems.
Why are we focusing on her headache? 😣

Who was Malcolm?!?!?!

No, oh no, did the Author forget who was present in the scene and made a mistake in a name in chapter 1?!
"The ring glistened as the sun’s low rays bounced off of its brushed silver and Jen noticed Malcolm intently staring at it."

But currently there's supposed to be "mom + dad", brother Tyler, Courtney the bff and Alex the BF. Who is Malcolm, who isn't mentioned in the following pages?!?!?!

So far fun, I'm pretty sure I can already predict the ending, sweet like the other Mandanna witch book I've read...
But is there a singular ONE set of decent parents? I'm not asking much, just ONE. Luke, Theo, Sera, Francesca, all children of horrible parents and all more or less relevant characters. Hmmm.

Boy, Emily Wilde is one of the most hardcore characters I've found in the last years. Imperfect, flawed, smart as a whip, a cold fish and frighteningly hardcore.

Not even the 10%, and we already have suspicions about 🐝's nature. I like it, straight to the point, so we can focus on really important mysteries.

Oooh, 🐝 made her pretty in the sketch, something she doesn't see in herself and considers him mocking her and not being besotted with her! Awwwwwww! 💓

I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far, but, how does one pronounce Bambleby? I'm currently convinced it's Bumblebee 🐝, and not bAmblebY, but... Haha

I'm sorry, am I supposed to find his double accidental murder fun?

Oh, no, apparently I like the writing until she was describing her family. This? I miss Vera...

The writing, the background and relationships between the MC and her family I like, the premise behind her date is a bit forced...

"And so I tried to think of where I would want to be, if I were not so bound to this hopeless task.” Dora knitted her brow. “You cannot have thought of Lady Cushing’s ball,” she said sceptically. “I did not,” Elias said. “I thought of you, Dora. But you are here, and so here I am.”

I'm almost halfway through and it's still shaping up to be a four-five stars. This is world building that I enjoy and the fact that the author made a character who feels half the things and still conveys everything? Chef's kiss!

Is this enemies to lovers done right? I guess it won't last that long, but so far, it's absolutely delightful!

I'm in love! Dora and her friendship with steadfast, lovely Vanessa, Lord Sorcier, who doesn't deserve to be called by his name yet (and it's wonderful!), and Albert!!! Characters to love!

Ew. They're speaking, in public in the year 1865.

Best friend... You've known her for a week and apparently kept quite a few important details from her.
But the biggest problem is we don't actually see the two women bonding, but instead are told "they're besties now".

"Kate felt a pang of pity for the young man. He very likely didn’t wish to lose his position. And who could blame him? “Shall we go inside?” she asked Caro instead."

Speak up then! I am not a fan of the main heroine already, I don't like the prose, the lack of detail and the amount of exposition... Oh no, oh no.

Oh no, I don't know what murderino is either... This is not good, me being bewildered in the dedication section.

So far I really like it, Gore seems like a hoot, the main heroine quiet and displaced enough herself that it all makes sense. Graham is definitely the standout, but the other minor characters as well... More slice of life than thriller however.
