I just finished the introductory section of the book. I do really enjoy the writing style and it reminds me of a lot of books I had to read for my literature classes and undergrad. This book will take me quite a while to get through as it’s 800-some pages.

“There’s that old story,” said Eva, ignoring the question, “about the serpent and the dancers who tame them. It likes music. It likes you. Didn’t you see how playful it was with you in the sea cave?”
“It tried to eat me.”
“It does that.”

The concept of this book is very good and would make a fantastic anime style show. However, so much has happened in these first 70 pages, it actually gave me a headache. The powers and the lore all over the place and I feel like the author could’ve taken a lot more time so that it did not feel as overwhelming. That being said, I feel like this book is just not for me, but my fiancé is very excited to read it.

I have officially finished the first three chapters and unfortunately have found myself frustrated. There is little to no exposition which leaves you constantly absorbing a large amount of information trying to follow a fairly complicated world. I feel more world building would’ve been incredibly beneficial since there is a complicated superpower/magic system between the two worlds described in this novel so far.

This is my first official Stephen King read, even though I have a good handful of his books sitting in my library. I’ve barely started, and I’ve already decided that I’m gonna go back through and tab this book. Categories so far: ‘Clues to plot’ and ‘Foreshadowing’.
