starting to get tedious now that the novelty has worn off. The format is sort of effective? but I don’t think it lends itself well to a full-length novel. I would’ve preferred 50ish pages of this followed by something more connected; so far a meh middle ground between poetry collection and lit fic

A very rare occasion where it feels like this is “too good”— The prose here is so beautiful and poetic but so ornate to the point where I’m really having trouble understanding scenes + I’m spending a lot of time parsing paragraphs to where it stifles me from getting truly swept into the story. Potential dnf but for a unique reason

G: these stories are somehow endlessly readable yet unaffecting

Book One: I related to nothing and somehow felt it all (or at least I felt what is physically possible for me). I’m not sure how this almost made me cry but I am Hooked with a capital H followed by an -ooked

A Memoir, Remembered: Well then. Disregard what I said earlier. This is getting much better than pretty good

My Life: since this is presented as an unfinished memoir, it was such a nice touch for the sections about Mildred to be mostly complete. All the sections where Andrew is just enthusiastically listing the reasons he loved his late wife made my heart so full… the facts about Wall Street were boring asf tho

Bonds: Diaz presents mundane ideas in the most interesting way possible, but in the end they’re still mundane ideas

Really givin this a shot but im kinda bored

Prologue: Whenever I read fantasy I wince a little when they introduce terms that are common in their universe but the words themselves sound a bit silly (Black Whisper, the Secret Peace, the Seventy-Seventh Year of Gandolo, etc.). But I always soldier on bc GoT is full of that stuff (dragonglass) and it was fucking awesome

Taking this one essay per week bc I feel like I should finish it but I think the ideas aren’t really revolutionary anymore— although becoming antiquated due to your own success is probably a good thing
