Had to put down the book to do a progress update and express my dissatisfaction that a jolly little fat boy named Sugars McNutts was only just now brought up on page one hundred and sixty-two. He's just been living in Winesburg this whole time and you've been hiding him from me? Give the people (me) what they (again, me) want: Sugars McNutts!

Oddly comforting that people were this lonely and isolated 100 years ago, too! Also making me grateful that horse trampling isn't as much of a daily looming concern as it seemed to be back then.

Introduction is quite enchanting, first chapter (so far) is pretty dry and over-written with just enough of a compelling thesis to keep me going. Seems like Lantz is trying to thread a pretty tough needle by pitching this towards both aestheticist academics without a background in games AND game designers without a background in art history. Nevertheless, it's charming to stick an itch.io link in a footnote!

Within 30 seconds of settling into Shipe Pool with my e-reader, a kid told his dad he wanted to show him "how wet [he] can kick" and proceeded to splash the ever-loving fuck out of me. Then, a young girl begged her mom to play Imagine Dragons off her phone, which the mom happily obliged.
