Memoir interwoven with history, sociology and pulp culture in a way that is conversational and stream of consciousness. Minus points to the narrator mispronouncing the word "Tuskegee", especially in a book about blackness in America.

Some new to me stories of homicides, and some old chestnuts like the Dyatlov Pass and Heaven's Gate cult.

I could have done without the author's prologue justifying her interest in this topic, but I did appreciate her description of the archival research she had to do for this book.

Murderbot, Gurgathin, and Rathi working in a group together is a comically delightful treat in "Fugitive Telemetry."

I know, I know, Fugitive Telemetry takes place before Network Effect, despite being published after it. Still, I need to catch up before the new novel comes out in May.

Sancho Panza doesn't turn up until 7 chapters in. Chapter 8, of Volume 1, Part 1, is where the famous battle against windmill giants happens.

This book is rather slice of life listless, but there's the question of serial murders that I am hoping gets answered.

If you've seen the Hitchcock film (or other moving image adaptation) before reading this book, the build up to the fancy dress ball is full of dramatic irony.

Mrs. Danvers preserving Rebecca's room is decidedly unsettling. The second Mrs. De Winter not taking a moment to collect herself then order the servants to remove any of Rebecca's personal items, or items with her monogram, from Manderley is also disturbing to me.

Lady, this is YOUR home now: act like it!

I don't know if it's the narrator's delivery, or my previous familiarity with the topics covered, but this may be too dry (and a bit out of date, since the core text was written in 1991) to be a good leisure read.

Yes, yes, Mrs. De Winter is anxious and insecure, when do we get to Rebecca not being the perfect being that she keeps comparing herself to?

I am treating the other patients' misogynistic opinions as posturing, folkloric fan fic. Given that they spend limited, if any, time around women, they might as well be discussing the behavior patterns of dinosaurs.

The second Mrs. De Winter clearly has an anxiety disorder. If I am to finish the novel this time I need to go slowly because having to read another person's emotional flailing is draining and exhausting.

Too bad she doesn't have a sassy, gay friend.
