Such a disappointment. I had high hopes for this one but it isn't anything like the description. For some reason I thought this was set in an earlier time period.

2020 has kicked my love of nostalgia into high gear for sure. I've definitely found some comfort in the silliness of the gothic genre. I hear books two through four in this series are much different than what comes later. So I will enjoy these for what they are, over the top bleak mysteries with a supernatural flair.

So glad this book was recommended to me. The mystery is intriguing. The characters are eccentric. Dialogue just like the b&w movies of this time. Lots of fun!

I am all for offering up Dr. Montague's wife and Arthur as sacrifices to the house. It is interesting to see the effect the house is having on Eleanor's sanity and her connection with the Theo. It is an interesting look at the complexities of female relationships and how easily envy and cattiness can sour a relationship.

First night in Hill House was uneventful. Shirley Jackson can skillfully build the tension while describing a house; never once becoming dull.

I really do enjoy Tuppence in her older years.

This is moving a little slow for me. I'm not sure why but I always struggle with authors who like to include where things were bought in descriptions. The antique tray bought at so and so flea market. The muffins were made from last summer's blueberries picked on such and such mountain. It usually feels very irrelevant to me and makes the story drag a little.

Hugh Fraser doing the voices of little old ladies is priceless.

I tried reading "Secret Adversary" many years ago but the characters didn't keep my interest. I'm not sure if it is Hugh Fraser's narration or if this plot is just more up my alley. I am finding both Tommy and Tuppence less irritating in their older years. lol Up next for me in the Tommy and Tuppence series is "By the Pricking of My Thumbs." I hear it should make a good October read. Hugh Fraser narrates as well.
