First King. Did something I never do and read all the forewords and shit. Interesting first chapter, doesn’t feel like there’s a massive barrier of entry to avoid.

More cohesive than Cat’s Cradle. His style of writing isn’t really my thing but I can get behind it for this one.

I kinda remembered the plot from the movie but the way it is laid out here is very tragic. Interesting framing.

Really wonderful writing from Tolkien feels magical. Has a good knack for setting the scene and explaining things without being heavy handed.

Highlighting this victim because he’s the first one so far to call out the Japanese people too. All this time I’ve been thinking like damn if they were a bit more proactive and less passive less people would’ve gotten hurt and he literally just said that. Also the lack of a good response from the police and government is shocking. Really bad situation.

Really did not expect to be pissed off at the victims but I kinda do feel pissed off. I’m guessing this is a culture thing but why are so many of the people so stubborn omg. Also them reaching the hospital screaming “I can’t see” and the person in charge saying “this isn’t and eye clinic” omg kys

Wasn’t planning on reading much but man the Akashi siblings interviews were really gripping. Loved the way Murakami wrote for the sister’s part.

Really interesting reactions from the people who were affected. It’s weird that they all kinda had similar stories about waking up a bit earlier than usual or running a little late. Also the apparent “whatever” attitude most of them have towards Aum is really fascinating. Maybe it’s a culture thing but I would’ve made it my mission to destroy that organization lol.

It’s not very often that I decide to pick up a book, even less a interview/essay book. But recently I had watched a video on YouTube about the Tokyo subway attacks and saw that Murakami was listed as one of the sources for the video. I never finished Kafka on the shore but his prose left an impression in me. So far what I’m seeing from the interviews the book presents have been very gripping so far.

Wasn’t planning on reading this but had nothing better to do and it’s been pretty good. Very nuanced characters and and the way Reid writes about Evelyn makes me think she was a real person which is great

I know I’m supposed to suspend my disbelieve for a time but I literally can not take seriously all the shit that happens to Jude. Are you telling me he went hitchhiking and every single person who gave him a lift ended up being a pedophile???? Like really???

After what’s probably the worst and most hard to read part of the book, I’m done with part 4. My opinion on this one has changed a lot and I’m not sure wether the change was positive or negative

So all the progress I quickly made with this book suddenly got stopped for a couple of weeks because of how heavy and borderline traumatized I ended up being after reading these last couple of pages. Reading has been difficult ever since…

Something about the way that Harold writes about revenge and what he’d do to the people who’d wronged him seems so understandable but scary at the same time. I feel conflicted on this. Makes me think a lot.
