The Butterfly Lampshade by Aimee Bender

Okay because I’m not going to leave an official review, I want to take a moment before I say I’ve completed the book.

We got a slightly more bad than neutral ending, but I really think it’s probably the best ending for the story. I was expecting to be disappointed with it, but I really wasn’t. Satisfied? Maybe not completely, but to be satisfied with everyone’s end here would be to cheapen the story.

“Babe, babe, look at me. This isn’t you. He isn’t worth it. Babe, look at me-“

Ik this is, like, the climax of the book, and there’s so much bloodshed, but I had a chuckle at the main character trying to get her bf (?) to snap out of it……. Whatever it is.

As much as I don’t like “bad ending” stories, I recognize that there are plots where a “good ending” cheapens the message and the challenges in the story. I think this book is going to be one where the “best” possible ending is still not “good”. Even if they destroy the machine, the damage it has already and will continue to cause should be irreversible.

I fear I’ve gotta cruise. This is due in under a week, along with Full Speed to a Crash Landing, and Polybius is due in two weeks🫠 But you know who’s got two thumbs and just bought two new books anyway? This guy 👍🤪👍

Also I accidentally read a spoiler for this book so now I have to figure out who’s going to die before they do🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
