Toxic masculinity, douchebag rich kid, and lots of squicky male gaze so far. Gimme a female or queer protagonist any day.

Shapeshifters in SPACE, cool idea but before the Destined Mates even meet, the story is chock-full of gay-bashing, attempted rape and suicide.

picked up around halfway through, probably about the time Mycroft's true crimes are revealed.

I'm reminded me of Ender's Game, where (unrealistically) two brilliant children take over the internet to begin a world movement--because Plot.

The world is a lively character, but I'm struggling with the neo-feudalism aspect; this story is at the same time claustrophobic and global--a palace intrigue touching on all the movers and shakers of the 25th century, as if they're a dysfunctional family.

I like how it plays with gendering, and the vision of the future, but it's a slog.

Started out a bit rom-com "oops, I spilled a drink all over you, then babbled like an idiot, then vented to my best friend how hot you were." Took a left turn when the protagonist turned out to be a ginger, band geek dom top. Nice mix of contrasts.

Romance seems a bit rushed—or maybe it’s just good clean lust and a savior complex.

Would be nice if Cole was vers; American guy with an Asian bottom is a bit cliche, even if he’s half Asian himself.

Shaky start, growing on me. Steamy sex scenes; emo protagonist is needy af, but complex and real.

Emo at 11; Main Character is...gay-not-accepted-by-family, ...gay-lost-lover-tragically, ...PTSD, surprised he's not the one auto-euthanizing.

Supremely sappy melodramatic romance saved by monumental amounts of snark, dick jokes and slapstick.

"China did not have a Purge" interesting, both in the world-building sense and in the meta sense. Worldbuilding wise, there's a whole nation that may be ahead in the magical arms race, wonder if there are Chinese Lupi. Metawise, it's nice to see a series that acknowledges there is more to the world than the US and Western Europe.

Some books I read to avert boredom, some books I linger over, and read only when I can devote my entire attention. This is one of the "entire-attention" books.

leaning real hard on the "half-alien" premise. Kinda like "I'm a fairy princess" in space.
