Pains me that I might have to DNF, or at least Imma put it on ice for a while.
I really wanted to love this series, but aside from the Caribbean-esque setting, it just isn't hitting :( which is a great shame.

I hate Violet x Xaden because of how hamfisted it is, thus of course I'm not gonna enjoy the sex scenes.
So it brings me great annoyance when they start foreplay and I think "cool lemme skip to the next chapter" except the next chapter is still them doing foreplay and eventually leading to sex. WHY HAVE A NEW CHAPTER IF YOU'RE GONNA RESUME AT THE EXACT SAME PLACE AS THE LAST?! DAMN YOU YARROS WITH YOUR POOR SEXING

Yup, Violet x Xaden is the biggest problem of this book, whenever their relationship is referenced, its just so damn cringe.
Also, I'm very perplexed at how despite the fact everyone needs to work together, everyone seems to be determined to piss everyone else off.

I think, Violet and Xaden's relationship is the least interesting thing about these books lol. Every obstacle they come across feels forced, stupid or legit at odds with the story.

You know, for all the things Yarros does badly
(Her main characters, the by the numbers tropes, Violet's corny ass POV) The dialogue is usually pretty fun/banterous
And though cliche, the plot is interesting and fast-paced.
So yeah..
Forgot how bad the general writing is, but I am enjoying it thus far.

Something about how much Mikail enjoys the idea of a noble going down on him is giving me what the younguns would call "the ick". Meanwhile, I've never liked sex scenes in books... so there's that.

Has been fun thus far ya know, characters are intriguing, and I feel like girly-girls are quite rare in non-slice of life/drama novels because everyone wants badass hard women. (I do like badass hard women but) Eery has been a breath of fresh air just by liking dresses. (Just to say it again, I DO like badass hard women, but I'm glad there are still girly girls out there too)
