My feelings about this book are a little mixed. On one hand, I believe that Thurman is addressing a topic that has long been discussed in Black literature, but on the part of the lighter-skin/mixed members of the race. On the other, I feel that Thurman's analysis of Emma Lou is incredibly patronizing and often divorced from "truth."

From the outset there is no doubting Kuang’s intentions. The language is fast paced, and packed with meaning. There is no shyness, from the title to how her characters are perceived, which is only underlined by her author notes. She is pointedly accusing the Western world of abject cruelty, which is especially damning in England, who saw themselves as exporters rather than importers of colonialism and the slave trade

600 pages of exposition to finally get some rising action MY GOD

I think I’d go insane. Genuinely. The monotony of the situation, the constant surveillance, the unknown of it all. You can’t thrive in that. I almost feel like I’m going insane reading it

There’s an interesting juxtaposition here, steeped in an abundance of grey matter. There’s the sympathy for the oil techs kidnapped wife, and the fear of what could happen to hear, which is only cross referenced by the anger at these oil execs who have decimated the land and created this conflict.

Two things: Catelyn is an absolute BITCH and I feel so bad for Jon Snow and two Martin is a subpar writer with absolutely no finesse or sense of poetic prose. The writing is so easy to get through cause it’s so surface level

Hooks presents a devastating history in a clear condemnation of segregated feminism as well as a clear voice for a race of women neglected from the annals of historical analysis. My heart hurts for the women abused, tortured, and forgotten in a prejudicial system.
