maybe just because it's 2 non Cassandra clare authors instead of 3 and maybe because they are actually pretty much all (at least thus far) told through magnus' internal narrative (instead of like starting in his and then switching to another character a bunch) but the like...voice in these feels less weird and jarring than in tales from the shadowhunter academy

I understand that relationship angst provides juicy tension but in the previous three books clary and jace were so FUCKING annoying with how much they would argue over nothing that it fr almost turned me into an incest supporter in the hopes that they would just shut up and get together already, so the jace avoiding her thing is annoying, I wish that the book would explore their dynamic as a functioning couple

it's crazy that Isabelle is being all "you cant just pretend you're not a part of this!!!" to clary as if clary has not been trying so hard to get people to include her and everyone just keeps leaving her behind or not teaching her anything. like i genuinely dont understand where Isabelle is getting this

cant believe everyone was just reading this joyously as it corrupted your developing minds

it just really feels like clary is still an outsider in everything. like we're 3 books in and no one will teacher her anything or let her do anything, and it does not make for a compelling or entertaining read if the main character is just consistently kept at an arms length from the world.

this is so annoying i am so annoyed

people keeping clary out of the loop "for her protection' is genuinely just annoying and unfun to read it is not compelling and it does not make for entertaining character conflict

genuinely frustrating to read how no one will teach clary anything about her world or how to do anything and continuously make decisions for her and take away her agency and then get mad at her for trying to involve herself in matters that directly concern her

Simon has been a bit of a dick to clary by blaming her for not liking him back in the previous book as if clary did something wrong by just not being in love with him and like just deciding she is his girlfriend in this book without talking to her but like yeah if I saw my crush be magically decreed to be kissed by who she desires most and then have that be her brother instead of me I would also flee in disgrace

it is deeply amusing that he says he is going to call the alien "he" so that he doesn't have to say "it" to be gender neutral as if "they" is not a perfect reasonable gender neutral option lol

the way in which Mika straight up says shinoa is in love with yu and yu just kind of goes "hm...." and then moves on with no indication that he gives even the slightest shit LMAO

so I think ive made a comment abt this every time ive read this shit but it is genuinely insane how these people CORNER Neil, ATTACK him, and then pressure him (a high school student!!! dont care if he's a legal adult) to sign a contract without his parents present
