After the Burger Court ended the federal moratorium on death penalties in 1976, states were so giddy to begin executing people again that they accepted the creation of a “lethal injection” by a man with zero qualifications and zero medical research to back up his decision. For decades and decades and decades people would be (and still are) subject to tortuous deaths by drug concoctions with no medical literature.
